Deryk was raised in Naicam, and after graduating from high school attained a Diploma in Biotechnology from SIAST. He spent almost 8 years doing research with University of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Research Council and QSV Biologics. After spending 1 ½ years at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, he moved to Humboldt in 2010 to start with Schuler Lefebvre Funeral Chapel. Deryk received his Funeral Director/ Embalmer licence in 2013 and became partner/owner in 2013. In 2016, he married Elizabeth Shortland of Muenster where they reside with their family Lucas, Charlotte and Arthur.
