Edward, the fourth of five children was born to Hubert and Josephine Altrogge (née Kuemper) at Cudworth Hospital on August 4, 1929. He took his schooling at Hoodoo Country School in the St. Benedict district. Being the eldest boy in the family, he left school after Grade 8 to help with the family farm. He got in on a few years of farming with horses, before his Dad was able to purchase a tractor, which was not easy as machinery was hard to find during the years of World War II. Farming was Edward’s only career, but he was also involved in various church and community organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, and the Wheat Pool Committee, to name a few. On July 20, 1955, he married Verna Demong. They moved a 1⁄2 mile west of where he grew up to establish their own farm. Their family grew to include six children: Gerald, Janet, Dale, Kenneth, Douglas, and Colleen. Until 1996, they farmed and then decided to rent out the farm and move to Humboldt to retire. Due to failing health, Edward became a resident of Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake in March of 2021, where he lived until his passing. Left to mourn Edward are his wife of 66 years, Verna; their six children and their families: Gerald (Cindy); Janet (+Pat) Dawson; Dale (Shauna); Ken (Marylou); Doug (Lisa); Colleen (Dean) Schmitz; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandson, and five great- grandchildren; his sister, Leona Tempel; and brother Ervine Altrogge. He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Josephine Altrogge (née Kuemper); his son-in-law Pat Dawson; his daughter-in-law Holly Altrogge; his parents-in-law Peter and Gertrude Demong; two sisters, Marie Petrie and Veronica Reynaud; and brothers-in-law: Bud Petrie, George Reynaud, George Tempel, Anton Demong, and Arthur Demong.
