Irene (née Szabo) Zimmer was born on September 25, 1934, after her parents, Bert and Ester (née Lukacs) Szabo, immigrated from Hungary to Spiritwood, Saskatchewan in 1932. Irene was raised with four siblings on the family farm and attended Resolute School. Times were tough and Irene left school to begin work, putting her nursing dreams on hold. There were many good times, including the dance where she met the love of her life, Joseph Zimmer Jr. After a short courtship, they married on April 15, 1952 and moved to the family farm, near Middle Lake, SK. Life was not always easy farming and raising a large family, so working at Bethany Pioneer Village helped to contribute to the household. In 1975, Irene and Joe became entrepreneurs and launched Parkview Cabins at Lucien Lake. Starting with a few cabins, the business expanded quickly into a store, restaurant, and catering business. Irene was well liked by the “cabiners” and many in the community. After Joe’s death in 2010, Irene maintained the business and property, with assistance from her children. Throughout her life she enjoyed all crafts, especially painting and crocheting, collecting stones and treasures from her many travel adventures, planting and gardening around her house, (known as the “Ponderosa”), riding the pontoon boat, or just relaxing on her swing on the lakefront deck. She especially adored her growing family and loved every visit. With an early onset of dementia, she moved to Bethany and enjoyed not having to cook! With the tragic increase of memory loss, Irene was still able to greet everyone with that “Szabo” smile. She relished every visit and seemed to have a special spot for birds, “Mootsies” (stuffed animals), and piggy puffs, which were lavished on her. Irene passed peacefully on December 2, 2021, surrounded by family and love.

Irene will be lovingly remembered by her family consisting of 6 children, 17 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren: Roger (Adel) Zimmer of Middle Lake and family, Robert Zimmer, and Michelle (Geoff) Barron and Camden, Ethan, and Emmett; Ron Zimmer of Ottawa, ON and family, Mark (Tracey) Zimmer and Bria, Sean (Alexa) Zimmer; Larry (Vivian) Zimmer of North Battleford and family, Shannon (Stu) Binder and Paige, Rylee and Becca, Tammy (Jason) Cameron and Jace, Charlie, and Cody; Shirley (David) Borstmayer of Cudworth and family, Pamela (Jon) Labonte and Jayda and Averie, Jennifer (Stephen) Jungwirth and Olivia and Liam, Shari (Michael) Chelack and Bentley and Weston, Michael (Jess) Borstmayer and Freya and Jack; Janet (Brian) Ortman of Humboldt and family, Ryan, Justin and Kimberly; Marilyn (Gerard) Kiefer of Melfort and family, Melissa (Michael Gordon) Kiefer and Ayden, Shelby (Brandon) McGillivray and Abel, Brenden Kiefer, and Megan Kiefer; and her sister Mary Poth of Saskatoon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
