Jack, as he was better known, was born on October 13, 1922, to William “Bill” and Josephine (nee Jestin) Archibald at home on their farm in the Kermaria District. Jack grew up quickly by assuming the responsibility of the family farm at age 16 while his father, brother and sister served in the military. He often shared stories of how he courted Irene Wales, taking her to dances in various modes of transportation, including walking or riding their bikes to Pleasantdale! Jack and Irene loved to dance and that love never disappeared as, later in life, they attended dances whenever they could, square dancing being one of their favorites. Jack and Irene were married on August 2, 1944. They had three children: Marlene born on Sept. 6, 1946, Jackolyn (Jackie) born on Aug. 10, 1951 and Barry (they finally got their boy) on July 26, 1956. We will all remember Jack for his spry demeaner. In his younger days, you would see him sprinting around his farm, rarely walking! He loved farming and he loved his family. He loved sports. He played hockey and baseball, curled and later in life took up golf. He was the oldest player on his ball team and even though he was still very competitive he decided to quit to make way for younger players. Jack loved a good game of cards but, watch out, as he wasn’t above a little cheating to get a rise out of his opponents! Marlene and Jackie remember their introduction to curling when the family had a team in Lac Vert. Barry remembers his Dad’s support throughout his ball and hockey careers. Although sometimes too vocal (ha ha), he was always there cheering us on.
Jack spent many hours plowing snow when they lived on the farm west of Lac Vert before they moved to the highway. He spent numerous years as Councillor and then Reeve of the RM of Pleasantdale, spending hours inspecting roads. Jack and Irene were both proud and active members of the Lac Vert Community Club. After 56 years on the farm, Jack turned the reigns over to Barry and Jack and Irene retired to Melfort where they enjoyed a new home built by Barry Bulych. Jack took his farming abilities seriously and had the lushest yard in the neighborhood even teasing his neighbor, Jim, about his brown grass! Jack and Irene loved Melfort. They golfed in the summer, danced in the winter and were great supporters of the Senior Centre. After Irene had a stroke, they moved to a condo in Melfort and Jack became her caregiver till she passed away on Sept. 26, 2008 after a wonderful marriage of 64 years. Jack continued to live in the condo until two years ago when he joined the wonderful and caring staff at Parkland. Jack was a jokester and could often be heard teasing the staff or offering to bring them back a whiskey when he left on a family outing. It seems only fitting that he is rejoining the “love of his life”. Exactly 12 years to the day after Irene passed, Jack went to sleep. His body survived 6 more days as Irene anxiously awaited his return to her side as his many friends and relatives had the card table set for a good game of smear or nil. Jack will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather as well as a hard-working, dedicated farmer and avid sports enthusiast. All who knew Jack will remember him for his laugh, his teasing and his love of striking up a conversation with anyone to put a smile on their face!
Jack leaves to mourn and to celebrate his life as well as carry on with the life lessons and principles he taught them, his 3 children, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren: Marlene (Lorne) Miller and family, Troy (Sarah) Miller [Amadeus, Nathaniel, Dominick], Tonya (Adrien) Sirois [Denae and Ozzy], Tyron (Tanis) Miller [Aisha and Kaiden]; Jackie (Joe) Hirsch and family, Dana Hirsch (Tim Ford) [Owen], Dant (Ana Maria) Hirsch [Hayden], and Kelly Hirsch (John Anderson); and Barry (Shelley) Archibald and family, Kerri Archibald (Cam Koski) [Brinkley and Gia], Courtney (Dane) Bachiu [Boh and Jovi], and Stacey (Cole) Simpson [Kinley, Rori and Kane].
