Obituary

Louie was born July 9, 1929 on the family farm near Carmel, SK, the second child of Leo (Leopold) and Helen (née Zerff) Freistadt. His schooling began in Carmel until his family moved into Humboldt, SK when Louie was 15, and at that time he started working at Western Produce. It was there he met the love of his life, Kay (Katherine) Borschowa. In October of 1950, Louie began work with CNR in the carman department and continued there until his retirement, 36 years later in October of 1986. Louie and Kay were married in 1951 at St. Vincent de Paul R.C. Church in Weyburn, SK, and started their life together in Humboldt, where they raised a family of three. Throughout his years with CNR, Louie and Kay also owned and ran small-town hotels in Muenster and Carmel. Louie and Kay enjoyed square dancing, bowling and especially playing cards. He also enjoyed playing sports like fastball, hockey and in later years, curling. While a member of “The Old Plugs” seniors’ hockey team, they took first place in a Vancouver tournament one year. Louie and Kay owned a cabin at Stoney Lake for many years where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends. For over 20 years, Louie was a member of the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department. With his likeable nature, Louie made acquaintances easily and many of these turned into lifelong friends. Family was most important to Louie and his children and grandchildren and great- grandchildren were his pride and joy. Louie will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his children Donna (Murray) Germaine and their family: Charlotte (Sacha) Fritz and their children Fiona and Maximilian, Janice Germaine (Matt Hoffman), Joanne Germaine (Terrence Dumont) and their children Tanner, Jordyn and Taylor; Garry (Brenda) Freistadt and their family: Katherine “Kit” (Mike) Broadfoot and their children Mikayla, Neely and Tyler, Sarah (Frank) Badinski and their children Reece and Francis, Steven Freistadt, and Maria Freistadt and fiancé Patrick Fusick; Clayton Freistadt and family: Robert “Bob” and his child Dan, and Bob’s fiancé Nathalie Wood, and Kevin Freistadt (Gillian Gratton); his brother Michael, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Kay (née Borschowa); parents Leopold and Helen (née Zerff) Freistadt; daughter- in-law Noreen (née Zilkowsky) Freistadt; parents-in-law Karl and Eva (née Neiszner) Borschowa; sister Beatrice Mildred in infancy; sister and brother-in- law Genevieve and Leo Desjarlais; sister-in-law Betty (néeTorwalt) Freistadt; and numerous other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law on Kay’s side.
